Student visa with a sibling as sponsor

An American student wanted to study a health and wellbeing course in Christchurch, with her New Zealand sister acting as her sponsor. We built the application around the sister sponsorship, making sure the relationship, funds, and study plan were all properly evidenced.

Background

[Applicant A] is a young American woman whose sister is a New Zealand citizen living in Christchurch. She was offered a place on a community health and wellbeing course at a Canterbury institute for one academic year. Because her sister, rather than a parent, was going to support her, the application needed to be set up carefully so the family relationship and the funding were both clearly shown.

Our approach

We worked with the referring agent to gather the full set of documents, including the sister’s identity and citizenship papers, proof that the two are sisters, her employment and bank statements, and the signed sponsorship and financial forms. We completed the online application capturing her identity, course, funding, and travel plans, and prepared a cover letter explaining her study and career reasons and her intention to return to the United States.

Outcome

The application was lodged with a complete sponsorship and funding pack. Immigration New Zealand was satisfied and the student visa was granted.

Lessons

A sibling can sponsor a student, but the family link has to be evidenced with certificates and identity papers, which is the step most often missed. Because only one sponsor is allowed, it is best to pick the person whose income and savings are easiest to prove rather than splitting the support across several relatives. And where money has landed in an account recently, showing where it came from at the outset avoids questions later.
