Visitor visa for a partner visiting from Colombia

[Applicant A] is a Colombian woman who lives in Bello, Antioquia, runs her own sportswear and tailoring business, and is active in her family’s church. Her partner, [PARTNER], is also Colombian but holds a New Zealand residence visa and lives in Christchurch. The couple had been together since 2019 and, by their accounts and a notarised declaration, had lived together as a de facto couple in Colombia before [PARTNER] moved to New Zealand. In August 2024 she engaged us, through her partner as sponsor, to prepare a visitor visa so she could spend an extended period in New Zealand with him.

We assembled a full partner and genuine-intent bundle. Her cover letter set out who she is, the purpose and dates of her visit, her planned movements, and her firm commitments at home, her family, her role leading music and teaching at her family’s church, and her self-employed business with regular clients. Both partners wrote detailed relationship statements giving a consistent history, backed by a notarised de facto union, tenancy and rent-payment records, a photo timeline, and support letters. On the sponsorship side, the partner completed the sponsorship undertaking and we included his residence visa, employment agreement and payslips to show he could support and house her.

The application was prepared and lodged in August 2024 with the full partner and genuine-intent bundle, and was approved. The value of the matter is the detailed overseas submission and the comprehensive supporting bundle. Immigration New Zealand was satisfied and the visitor visa was granted.

An overseas partner-based visitor visa lives or dies on the genuine-visitor test, which has two parts the submission must satisfy together: a genuine relationship, and a genuine intention to stay only temporarily. Because an extended visit to a resident partner naturally raises a concern about staying on, the application should show strong, continuing ties to home, here her family, her church role, and her ongoing business with regular clients. The relationship should be backed by independent records rather than the couple’s own statements alone, which is why a notarised union, rent history, a photo timeline and support letters all carry weight. And a proper sponsorship from the resident partner, with his residence, work and income evidence, strengthens both the practical support and the overall credibility of the application.
