Visitor visa granted after an earlier refusal

[PARTNER] is a Kenyan medical doctor and the long term partner of [SPONSOR], a Kenyan national who holds New Zealand residence and works in Christchurch. The couple kept their relationship going long distance through the COVID border closures, and [SPONSOR] was expecting their child. An earlier partnership based visitor visa for [PARTNER] had been refused in late 2022, when Immigration New Zealand was not satisfied the couple met the living together and stability requirements and queried a difference in the sponsor’s earlier residence declarations. The fresh application had to overcome that history.

We lodged a detailed cover letter that defined the visit precisely, a roughly three week stay to support [SPONSOR] around the birth of their child, after which [PARTNER] would return to Kenya to finish his specialist training. We documented the relationship with photos over time, chat records, couple letters and support letters, and evidenced shared finances through years of money transfers, joint property and joint life insurance. We set out [PARTNER]’s strong ties to Kenya, including two properties, substantial savings, a vehicle, family and two hospital appointments as a specialist doctor, and we backed the sponsorship with the sponsor’s verified income, tax records and bank evidence.

Immigration New Zealand granted the visitor visa on 1 November 2023, allowing stays of up to six months on each arrival. The grant followed a recent refusal on the same relationship, so it represents a successful recovery achieved by recasting the visit and building a far stronger set of evidence.

After a partnership refusal, a fresh visitor visa can still succeed if the visit is recast as a clearly defined, time limited stay with a genuine purpose, because a concrete short stay narrative answers the questions a vaguer partnership framing leaves open. Strong, concrete ties to home are decisive for an applicant overseas, since documented work, property, savings and family directly rebut any concern that the person will overstay. A thorough set of evidence that addresses each earlier reason for refusal point by point is worth far more than refiling the same material, and sponsorship only carries real weight when it is backed by the sponsor’s verified income and bank balances rather than a bare signed form.
