Background
[Applicant A] applied for a full-fee Student Visa to continue his studies. Immigration New Zealand raised a concern because he had earlier said he would move on to tertiary study once he reached the required English level, and had not done so. It treated that as relevant to whether he was a genuine student. He was living in Palmerston North and had bank evidence of his funds.
Our approach
We lodged a full response that addressed Immigration’s concern head-on. It explained why his plans had changed, set out his genuine reasons for the current course, provided bank evidence of his funds, and confirmed his commitment to the study he was now undertaking, all under a cover letter from us.
Outcome
The Student Visa was approved within twenty days. Explaining the change of plan openly, rather than glossing over it, was what satisfied Immigration he was a genuine student. His pathway later progressed to a work visa with an accredited employer.
Lessons
When a student’s plans have changed, the honest explanation is what wins the case. We set out plainly why [Applicant A]’s intentions had shifted, rather than trying to minimise the change, and that candour is what reassured the officer.
Immigration treats a mismatch between earlier statements and later actions as a genuine-student concern. The response had to meet that head-on, giving a credible reason for the change and re-anchoring the assessment on his present, genuine study plans.
Clear bank evidence of funds is a basic but essential part of any student application. We documented his ability to pay his fees and living costs so that side of the application was beyond doubt.
An early student matter can be the start of a long relationship. This 2021 student application was the first step in a pathway that later progressed to a work visa with an accredited employer, handled by MyLaw.
