Visitor visa for a partner and her child overseas

[Applicant A] lives in South Africa with her 15-year-old child. Her partner, [SPONSOR], is a New Zealand resident living in the Bay of Plenty. The couple have kept their relationship going across two countries, and [SPONSOR] has travelled to South Africa to see her. They wanted [Applicant A] and her child to come to New Zealand on a visitor visa.

We built a large evidence pack and worked through several drafts of the relationship story before lodging. We included proof that [SPONSOR] had flown to South Africa to visit, which showed an ongoing relationship across the distance. We also covered the child’s reason for the visit, schooling and accommodation arrangements, and [Applicant A]’s own ties to home, so the application told a complete and consistent story.

The completed application was lodged with Immigration New Zealand in mid 2025. Immigration New Zealand was satisfied and the visitor visa was granted.

When a partner and a child apply to visit together, the child’s part of the application needs its own attention, with a clear reason for the trip and proper arrangements for school and accommodation. Evidence that the sponsor has travelled overseas to see the applicant is one of the strongest ways to show that a long distance relationship is real and continuing.
