Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has warned that it is aware of a rise in phone scams in which callers pretend to be from INZ, often using New Zealand mobile numbers. INZ says these calls are not genuine and that it will never phone people to ask for payments.
According to INZ, scammers commonly claim there is an urgent problem with a person’s visa in order to create pressure or fear. Callers may ask people to “press 1” or to speak to an operator. In some cases they have demanded payment, requested personal information such as passport or bank details, or threatened legal action if the person does not comply. INZ stresses that these calls do not come from the agency and urges people not to engage.
What to do if you receive a suspicious call
INZ advises anyone who receives a suspicious call to take the following steps.
- Do not provide any personal or financial information.
- Hang up immediately.
- Report the scam to CERT NZ using its online reporting form, the reporting form for businesses and individuals on the CERT NZ website.
