Residence defended after Immigration raised a historic character issue

[Applicant A] is a South African occupational therapist applying for residence in New Zealand under the Green List Straight to Residence Category with her two young children. She had earlier been granted a work visa here. When her residence application reached Immigration New Zealand, the officer raised a character concern about a theft offence committed in South Africa more than a decade earlier, and gave her a short time to respond.

We prepared a detailed response asking Immigration New Zealand to exercise its discretion in her favour. We explained the circumstances of the old offence, addressed its seriousness honestly, and set out the strong case for looking past it: more than a decade with no further offending, two children settled here, professional registration and steady work, and her ties to her community.

We lodged a detailed character-waiver response on 11 April 2025 asking Immigration New Zealand to look past the historic offence. The response set out her rehabilitation, her family ties, and her professional standing as the basis for granting residence despite the old conviction. Immigration New Zealand was satisfied and the residence was granted.
