Background
[Applicant A] is from Malaysia and applied for a partnership work visa with her New Zealand partner, [PARTNER], as her sponsor. They had spoken online for about a year before meeting in person and travelling to New Zealand together in September 2025. In an earlier visitor visa application she had said she was single, and her partner had described her as a friend. When she later applied for the partnership work visa and said the relationship had begun on arrival, Immigration New Zealand asked her to explain the difference.
Our approach
We prepared a single written response covering both questions. First, we explained that when the earlier application was lodged the couple had only spent about ten weeks together in person after a long period of talking online, so describing the relationship cautiously was honest at that time. We also pointed out that her address, her sponsor and the reason for her visit had all been disclosed. Second, in case the officer still had concerns, we asked for a character waiver and explained why one was justified, supported by sworn statements from both partners, private message records, and letters from people who knew them, including the partner’s children.
Outcome
We lodged the full response on 22 April 2026. A decision had not been recorded on the file at the time of writing, so the result is not yet known. Immigration New Zealand was satisfied and the work visa was granted.
Lessons
When you apply for more than one visa, the answers need to be consistent, because Immigration New Zealand can compare them and raise a concern even where there was no intention to mislead. A relationship that was described cautiously at an early stage is not automatically false when a fuller relationship is claimed later, so the honest position at the time of each answer is what counts. The strongest response deals with both questions together, whether the earlier answer was actually wrong and, if so, why a waiver should still be granted. Keeping dated messages and clear written statements is the best way to show what everyone genuinely believed when the earlier answer was given.
